Frequently Asked Questions

What is the first step I should take in enrolling my child into St Michael's?

Download an enrolment form from the Enrolment section of this website. Fill it in and drop it into the school office. Alternatively, contact the school office by phone or in person to put your child’s name on the enrolment list and you will be given/sent an enrolment form.

 

Is it possible for us to have a look around the school?

You are most welcome to call and make an appointment to meet with the Principal, or book a time for a tour of the school grounds and buildings.

 

When will I find out whether my child has been accepted into the school?

Enrolment interviews are held in May. You will receive a letter or phone call during April informing you of a time for you and your child to come in and meet with the Principal. Written offers of placement will follow in June.

 

How much are the school fees?

School fees are set by the Catholic Education Office and signed off by the Bishop. These will change slightly each year; currently they stand at $1807 per family (you only pay for the first child in the family).

There is also a Resource Fee and Excursion Levy, which covers books, stationery, excursions and incursions.  This varies from year to year depending on the needs of the grade.  Currently this stands at $100. 

School fee statements are sent to parents at the beginning of Terms 1, 2 and 3. Payments can be made in full or part using eftpos, BPAY, direct debit, cash, cheque or money order.

 

What sort of facilities does your school have to offer?

We have 11 classrooms that are clustered in three buildings. The classrooms are designed to enable flexibility in the delivery of lessons. There is also a Library, Music room, a hall, canteen, a Covered Outdoor Learning Area (COLA) and an administration block.

The school has access to the Parish Church which is located on the same block as the school. The play spaces for the students contain grass, asphalt and paved areas.

 

What are the opening hours of the school?

 School begins at 8:50am. Supervision begins at 8.20am. The school day concludes at 2:50pm and parents are expected to collect their children as soon as possible after this time.

 

Do the school buses run in my area?

The school buses service all areas of the Wingecarribee Shire and some southern parts of the Wollondilly Shire.

What extra-curricular activities are available at St Michael's?

There are many opportunities for your child to become involved in extra-curricular activities; St Michael’s has representative teams in swimming, athletics, cross country, AFL, soccer, rugby league, basketball and netball.Children also have the opportunity to try out for Mackillop (Diocesan representative) teams in several different sports.  

St Michael’s competes in chess, public speaking and Eisteddfods in Wollongong and Goulburn.

We have Leadership Groups in Mission, Environment, Social and Sport. We also have a Music Liturgy Group, music tuition and gifted and talented enrichment days. 

 

Is there an anti-bullying policy in place at the school?

At St Michael’s we believe that all members of the community have the right to a learning and working environment free from intimidation, humiliation and harm. We all share a responsibility to create a culture of caring which will not tolerate bullying.

We believe that bullying must be taken seriously and is not acceptable in any form.

In witnessing Christian values we reject ideas, beliefs and behaviours, which marginalize or victimize people.

 

How does the school canteen operate?

Our school canteen is open each Monday and Friday. It is serviced by volunteers from the parent community – we even have some grandparents who help! 

 

From where can I purchase the school uniform?

The school uniform can be purchased from Whytes Clothing Store, 106 Hume Highway Mittagong (48712636), Mimosa, 30 Orient St Willow Vale (48712764) and Initailly Yours (48785208).

The school hat can only be purchased through the school office.

The school also has a Clothing Pool with second hand items available for sale by donation.

Do you have organised after school care?

We don’t have After School Care. However, many of our students access an After School Service that is run by the Wingecarribee Shire Council at Mittagong Primary School. Students can get to this service by bus; Berrima Buslines can assist with this.

 

How can I / we become involved in the life of the school community?

Parents are encouraged to become actively involved in their children’s education at St Michael's. Ways you can help in your child’s classroom are listed in the next Frequently Asked Question. Other ways of becoming involved are volunteering to help in the canteen, attending special days and events such as school liturgies or performances, helping at special events such as sporting carnivals, fetes, working bees, fundraising committes etc

All are invited to become members of the Parents and Friends Committee, who work collaboratively with the school and parish community about matters regarding quality education for all children, and general issues about school life, including social events, fundraising and finances.

 

Will I be able to come and help in the classroom?

Yes, each grade will be different, but parents often participate and contribute in the classroom. This could include helping with reading and literacy programs, mathematics groups, technology, craft, or by offering expertise in a particular area of interest, such as Indigenous Education or Music.
